Darkest Dungeon 2 – The Binding Blade: More adventure and a long-awaited return
Here we’re going to talk about The Binding Blade DLC from the game Darkest Dungeon 2, which I’ve previously reviewed here on Gamohol. To find out more about the base game click here.
Then came the first additional content for Darkest Dungeon 2, a game released in May 2023. Seven months after its initial release, we’re now going to see if the content of this DLC, called The Binding Blade, was worth the wait, its cost-benefit ratio and whether it improves the quality of the game to be played on a live stream.
The Binding Blade brings the return of the favorite Crusader
The biggest highlight of this DLC was certainly the return of Reynauld, our Crusader who fans of the franchise, and who played the first game, began their adventure with. For those who don’t remember or don’t know, in the first game, you started out controlling Dismas and Reynauld, the former of whom was already available in the sequel, which left some people a little upset at not having an iconic character in the second game of the franchise.
However, Reynauld isn’t available directly after purchasing the DLC, you’ll need to follow hints and complete a side-quest in order to unlock him. This could be a great for the streamer to return to the game after so long and, with his audience, follow and unravel the hints to complete the mission and thus get the reward of playing with the character again.
New companion brings style and complexity
In addition to the character who returns from the first game, we also have the Duelist. This new character has a beautiful, eye-catching design, along with powerful but difficult-to-learn skills. Many will pick her up straight away and be a little confused by her moves, however she is certainly a very interesting character who rewards those who know how to use her full potential.
In The Binding Blade, new dangers are also present
Not everything is new for the team of heroes. In The Binding Blade there is also a new boss, called the Warlord. He is faced during the Crusader’s side-quest and will then be available as wandering boss on the map for future playthroughs.
He’s a very interesting boss visually and can give players a hard time, which is something very welcome to cover in the live stream, after all, it’s been a while since the base game was released and it’s always good to have more enemies to face.
Is the DLC content worth it?
In The Binding Blade we have 2 characters, each with their own set of items, stories and narrations, and the new Warlord boss. For the price charged, I was expecting a bit more content.
It would be very interesting if the Warlord came with his own map to explore, considering that the DLC for the first game added a whole new area with lots of enemies and bosses to face.As Darkest Dungeon 2 follows a more traditional Roguelite line, a new area would certainly make this DLC much more well received and would have more return for streamers to cover its content.
Starting with this review, we are adding a new category to analyze DLCs: Value for Money, evaluating how great the content of the DLC is for the price it is charged.
Darkest Dungeon 2 – The Binding Blade
Summary
In the end, as incredible as it is to have the return of our favorite Crusader together with the Duelist, the content of The Binding Blade, for the amount charged, doesn’t add as much as it could to make Darkest Dungeon 2 increase its replay factor and its live stream content. It will certainly be fun to revisit the game on a live stream and cover what’s new, but after that you won’t have much motivation to continue exploring more of the same.
