Builders of Greece: Rise of the Polis

Coming out from Early Access, Builders of Greece is a city-builder and strategy game set in the golden age of Hellenic city-states. Here you play the role of a ruler tasked with establishing and expanding a Greek polis. The game offers two primary modes: a narrative-driven campaign mode and a sandbox mode. In both modes, your objective is to build a thriving city by managing resources, constructing buildings, engaging in diplomacy, and ensuring the well-being of your citizens. The only difference is that sandbox mode is free of any narrative element, so you are able to experiment and play indefinitely as long as you wish.

Managing a Greek City-State in Builders of Greece

Campaign mode starts with a tutorial that explains the setting, the objective of the game and the key mechanics. As the ruler of a Greek polis, you must manage resources, construct different type of buildings and ensure the well-being of your citizens while also watching for potential threats. There is a decent variety in the type of buildings (homes, workshops, temples etc.) and multiple classes of citizens with different needs. The game features a perk system using technology as well the ability to trade and adjust taxes.

There are also diplomacy and trade mechanics, allowing to establish trade routes, negotiate with neighboring cities and decide whether to maintain peace or engage in warfare. Random events and weather conditions also add unpredictability to the gameplay, requiring adaptable strategies. The game’s well-crafted management mechanics and the unpredictability of random events can lead to varied playthroughs, enhancing its replayability. Those who have played any game in the Total War or Caesar series will likely be familiar with these mechanics, which work very well, although they are not as deep as in the above mentioned series.

The game is beautiful but riddled with bugs

Builders of Greece boasts a realistic art style that captures the beauty of ancient Greece. The developers focused on creating detailed environments with strong colors, realistic lighting and faithful architectural buildings. While the game is generally well-optimized, there are still some occasional stuttering and crashes, as well many bugs affecting NPC’s AI, camera controls, the trade system and the user interface. The game is no longer in early access, so these issues should be fixed as soon as possible to avoid players’ frustration and allow streamers to play the game without interruptions. While Builders of Greece can be engaging for streaming audiences (especially those interested in strategy games), it is advisable for streamers to test the game beforehand to ensure a smooth broadcast.
