YouTube plans to modify new policies that cut revenue from gamer content

YouTube appears to be listening to its community and is rethinking its latest monetization policies on the platform, which include new guidelines on violent content and inappropriate language that directly cut revenue from gamer content.

Implemented in November, YouTube’s new monetization policy directly affected gamer content creators with its strict rules against violent imagery and inappropriate language. Videos with games like “Resident Evil” and “The Last of Us” were directly affected by the new rules.

Content creators on Google’s video platform have been highly critical of the new guidelines, and it appears that YouTube is reviewing these monetization policies.

Speaking to TechCrunch, YouTube spokesperson Michael Aciman said: “In recent weeks we’ve heard from many creators regarding this update. That feedback is important to us and we are in the process of making some adjustments to this policy to address their concerns. We will follow up shortly with our creator community as soon as we have more to share.”

According to YouTube, videos will not be monetized, for example, if they include “image of dead bodies outside of an educational context”, violent acts against human beings intended to shock the audience and, of course, inappropriate language.

Demonetization happens if videos feature any of these elements within its first eight seconds.

Drug use, trafficking or dealings related to them are also on the list of reasons for demonetizing videos on YouTube, directly affecting game content such as “Grand Theft Auto V”.

Esports-related content is also likely to suffer under YouTube’s new monetization policies.

The reason for the new content monetization rules on YouTube is quite simple: advertisers. According to Google’s video platform, the new demonetization measures are aimed at improving the relationship with advertisers, who do not like to see their brands associated with videos with this type of content.
