YouTube: New policies cut gamer content monetization

Before the end of 2022, YouTube implemented new monetization policies that directly and almost mostly affected gamer content billing on the platform, worrying creators of this type of content.

These new guidelines for Google‘s video platform have placed gameplay content more deeply within the demonetization rules of videos, due to their violent content or use of inappropriate language.

The new rules came into force during the month of December and several creators, especially those with gamer content, are already suffering from the demonetization of their videos.

According to YouTube, videos will not be monetized, for example, if they include “image of dead bodies outside of an educational context”, violent acts against human beings intended to shock the audience and, of course, inappropriate language. Several popular games may be affected by these measures, such as “The Last of Us”, “Resident Evil” and “The Callisto Protocol”.

Demonetization happens if videos feature any of these elements within its first eight seconds.

Drug use, trafficking or dealings related to them are also on the list of reasons for demonetizing videos on YouTube, directly affecting game content such as “Grand Theft Auto V”.

Esports-related content is also likely to suffer under YouTube’s new monetization policies.

The reason for the new content monetization rules on YouTube is quite simple: advertisers. According to Google’s video platform, the new demonetization measures are aimed at improving the relationship with advertisers, who do not like to see their brands associated with videos with this type of content.

It is worth remembering that, despite being a new measure, the new monetization rules also apply to old content on the channels, which will drastically reduce creators’ earnings on YouTube.
