Untamed Tactics

Untamed Tactics: A wild and colorful tactical RPG

Untamed Tactics is a classic turn-based tactical RPG set in a colorful world populated by anthropomorphic animals. In the game, we take on the role of Greycoat, a valiant soldier who, following a shipwreck, explores the mysterious Wild Lands together with his crew.

Here we will meet several local tribes with whom we have to coexist in order to face an incoming threat. The story is quite linear, but in each chapter it is possible to choose between different paths that include dialogues, points of interest and also multiple battles.

However, it’s a shame that in a game like this all the choices and different paths don’t have much effect on the events of the story.

Talking on the battlefield

Battles take place on a map divided into multiple squares where we can move our characters during each turn. The positioning, classes and skills of the characters are of vital importance, just like the possibility of interacting with the environment (for example we can push opponents into traps).

The attacks differ in physical or mental and enemies can show different weaknesses depending on the type of attack. The possibility of discussing with enemies during combat is very interesting. Through the use of some dialogue cards, equipped with special effects, we can provoke enemies, scare them or even turn them into our allies.

This mechanic can often change the fate of the battle, so it should always be used when available. However, the artificial intelligence is really bad; it is often possible to notice enemies or allies attacking an empty space or voluntarily throwing themselves into traps.

Customization, classes and skills

During each chapter we will have the opportunity to expand and customize our party through a system of classes and sub-classes. Based on these, our skills and statistics will also change, so it is very important to try different strategies during battles.

Progressing with the story, we will also be able to obtain tomes that enhance our characters’ stats and items that can add bonuses to their attacks. However, there is no real skill tree, so the experience points obtained after combat can only be used to unlock predefined active and passive abilities.

Untamed Tactics

Untamed Tactics is slow, but has a high replayability factor

Technically speaking the game is well optimized on PC, with only few minor bugs. The game features colorful and simple graphics, which unfortunately are ruined by the low quality of the character animations.

However, replayability remains high thanks to the fact that the game world is procedurally generated during each playthrough.

Still, it is difficult to recommend Untamed Tactics to a streamer due to the excessive slowness of the turn-based combat, which can become repetitive and boring for both the viewers and the streamer. Despite a captivating prologue, the story never becomes interesting and it’s hard to feel attached to any character.

Summary

Untamed Tactics is a game with great potential, but poor execution. The colorful game world and anthropomorphic animals fail to offer a story worth of attention, while the slowness of the combat and the terrible AI end up ruining the gaming experience.
