Twitch, NVIDIA and OBS partner to offer better live streaming options
Transmission quality in live streaming is something serious and Twitch knows this well, as it recently announced a partnership with NVIDIA and OBS to offer streamers and viewers on its platform better transmission options, regardless of connection speed.
Enhanced Broadcasting, as they are called, were announced earlier this week, in a text written by Twitch CEO, Dan Clancy, on the platform’s official blog.
The new tool is currently in the Beta testing phaseand the streamers you can sign up to test itin that period.
How will the Enhanced Broadcasting work on Twitch?
The new tool will act directly on Twitch transcodes. Transcodes convert the streamer’s video into different resolutions to adapt the viewer’s experience, regardless of their internet connection speed.
Currently, transcoding is only available to partners of the Amazon’s live streaming platform due to its limitations, as it is done on Twitch’s own servers and, according to the platform, on machines with older processors.
The transcoding process, according to Twitch, is essential for a proper viewer experience on the platform and can be expensive.
To solve this problem and offer transcoding to 100% of the streamers, that’s where Twitch’s partnership with NVIDIA and OBS comes in.
Streamers who, in this Beta phase, use Enhanced Broadcasting, will transcode their live broadcasts directly from their computers, using their GPUs, bringing greater quality and lower latency to their broadcasts, regardless of the bit rate.
There will be 5 different resolutions available with Enhanced Broadcasting: ranging from 480p/30 and going up to 4K/60.
Setting up OBS
To do this, the streamer will have an automatic configuration of OBS at its disposal, configuring encoder, resolution, bit rate, frame rate and other parameters, alleviating the need to have an “appropriate configuration” for your machine and internet connection speed.
With automatic OBS configuration and broadcast transcoding, the streamer can be sure that their livestream will have the best quality for any viewer who watches it.
Twitch hopes to make Enhanced Broadcasting available to its entire community in the next major update to its platform, but for now, interested streamers can sign up for the Beta test of the feature through the Creator Dashboard.
