Twitch: Could the high amount of ads be a problem?
Serving ads on streaming platforms is always a sensitive topic of discussion in the community, with Twitch being perhaps the most criticized of all platforms. But, could the high amount of ads be a problem for Twitch?
The answer will vary from person to person, but in general, especially among the biggest streamers on the Amazon platform, the high amount of ads is indeed an issue that can kill the Twitch community.
The biggest criticism from streamers is about Twitch’s Ad Incentive Program, which offers a higher per-ad revenue rate if the channel schedules eight minutes or more of ads per hour of live stream.
For Asmongold, one of the biggest streamers on Amazon’s platform, this ad boost is “killing the channels and ultimately will kill the site” as a whole.
The streamer still claims that, while the incentive for at least 8 minutes of ads per hour of live stream is still optional, it has everything to become the standard in the near future of the platform.
Better for smaller streamers?
Criticized by bigger streamers who haven’t seen significant growth in their ad revenue on their channels, Twitch’s Ad Incentive Program may be better for smaller streamers. Is it?
It is remarkable how much ads can scare the audience away from the channels, regardless of their size, and for smaller streamers, this can be almost suicide, since 5 minutes or more of ads per hour of live can indeed reduce the retention of your audience.
Despite the risks, for smaller streamers, the Twitch Ad Incentive Program can indeed boost channel revenue in a short time. Each streamer will have to analyze whether it will be worth it or not.
Twitch’s response
Showing concern for complaints from its community, Twitch has already reported that it is studying a way to improve the Ad Incentive Program. The platform’s hope is to find a way for ads to be less interruptive during the live streams.
