Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Wrath of the Mutants

TMNT: Wrath of the Mutants is simple and it doesn’t innovate

It’s not new that games in the TMNT beat’n up genre are very popular and, especially after the release of the popular Shredder’s Revenge, we were excited to hear about a new game in the franchise.

Here we have Wrath of the Mutants which is a remaster of an arcade game released in 2017 and now re-released in 2024, with 3 new stages and 6 new bosses.

Without much new, Wrath of the Mutants is simple and repetitive

I was able to try out the game in three-player co-op and the experience was as expected for the genre. A classic beat’n up with the fewest buttons required, well-functioning controls and a great response time.

However, the game has a slightly strange character hitbox, which causes a lot of unnecessary damage to players just from contact with enemies, especially with so many characters on the screen during cooperative play. Bosses are quite varied, but don’t require much strategy to beat.

The characters have a lot of personality, but the game isn’t very polished

The game uses the 3D artwork of the animated series and the characters are well represented here, each with their own particularity, whether it’s the turtles or the enemies, with the turtles’ special attacks standing out.

However, its 3D models leave something to be desired as they are very simple, without much anti aliasing and not very flashy in color, which makes it difficult not to compare them with previous games, such as Turtles in Time on the SNES, which has vibrant colors that fit in very well with the game’s theme.

The same can be said of its soundtrack, which doesn’t have any striking music. There are also no scenes that explain the game’s story between stages. Which brings us to how the game works.

Here we have 5 initial stages and you can play them in any order and change the characters at will between each choice. Each stage has a mini-boss and a boss.

On standard difficulty we have 3 lives and 2 continues that are restored between each stage, which is very generous and allows the game to be completed without too many problems, even with its relatively high difficulty due to the collision problems of the characters and enemies.

On a live stream, the game needs support

This is a game in which the streamer needs to be able to hold the audience with his charisma and/or with friends playing along with him. The game itself isn’t that interesting to watch, which is a shame, because beat’n up Ninja Turtles have always been synonymous with games that are easy to hold an audience for all their charisma, soundtrack and beautiful graphics.

Played in its Steam version, the game runs well, I had no problems playing it. And the game is translated into a total of only six languages, even though it doesn’t have many dialogues, it would be interesting to have more translations available.

Summary

In the end, TMNT: Wrath of the Mutants is very simple and its remaster from the arcades to other platforms doesn’t innovate or make much effort to refine its gameplay, making it difficult for the streamer to bring good content.
