TikTok encourages horizontal video creation

The main vertical video platform, TikTok, now wants you to turn your cell phone to watch content on its platform by encouraging the creation of horizontal videos.

Yes, it seems that TikTok wants to compete directly with YouTube in the horizontal video market, even as YouTube is investing more and more in the Shorts format, its alternative to the vertical format popular on TikTok.

TikTok Horizontal

According to consultant Matt Navarra, some creators are receiving internal messages on TikTok about incentives for publishing videos horizontally. According to him, the platform guarantees greater publicity for 72 hours and, as a result, a greater number of views for horizontal videos that meet some requirements.

The requirements are:

  • Videos must be horizontal and over a minute long
  • Content must follow the platform’s Community Guidelines
  • Original content
  • No advertising

According to the message received by the consultant, content that involves lipsync and random recordings will not receive the incentive, but is not prohibited from the platform.

The videos will all be cataloged within TikTok with the Hashtag #longervideos.

TikTok has not yet officially commented on the incentive campaign for horizontal videos, which should be happening gradually and only for some creators chosen by the platform.

TikTok’s success in the video content creation market

When TikTok hit the market, it quickly became super popular, especially among younger people. With its success, competing platforms soon sought to adapt to the market demand for short, vertical videos.

While YouTube has Shorts, Instagram has Reels, which now also includes longer publications.

Now, TikTok wants market share from YouTube by pushing into horizontal video content. It is also possible that this will open up space for the platform to eventually reach larger screens, such as televisions.
