Teamfight Tactics: Riot Games’ next big step

The auto-battle game genre, also known as auto-chess, may not be as popular as it was in 2019, when the genre took over the world, but there is one title that still stands out: Teamfight Tactics. And it is with this game the next big step for Riot Games.

Launched in 2019 as a game mode for League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics soon became a standalone game in its own right, with both PC and mobile versions. And in its fourth year of life, the title is one of the last auto-battle games still going strong today and promises great things for the future.

And among these novelties, Riot Games promises: a new cycle of updates, with more space for temporary events, and greater investment in the eSports scene for TFT, as the game is also known.

Big things for Set 10

Currently on Set 9, released this week, Riot Games has already sent a warning: Set 10 will be special for Teamfight Tactics. In an interview with Gamohol, during a meeting with the international press at the company’s headquarters in Los Angeles, Geoff Virtue, executive producer of TFT, and Travis Boese, one of the game’s directors, said that big things are coming on Set 10.

Without revealing too many details, to keep the surprise for players, Geoff and Travis reaffirmed that the game will now have a new cycle of updates: it will be 3 sets per year, without mid-season updates.

With that, they stated that Teamfight Tactics will have even more space for temporary events, such as the successful Fortune’s Favor. Events will also allow for new ways to unlock cosmetics for the game.

“It’s the biggest content update in Teamfight Tactics history”

“We’ve learned so much from other auto-chess games, there’s no pressure to be one of the last popular auto-chess games,” said Travis Boese.

The Teamfight Tactics eSports scene

Riot Games knows very well how to develop an eSports scene. League of Legends and Valorant, its most popular games, have a consolidated and constantly growing professional competitive scene. And the company wants the same for Teamfight Tactics.

After some online tournaments, due to the isolation period of the COVID-19 pandemic, the first in-person TFT championship was announced and will take place in December, in Las Vegas, in the United States.

According to Geoff and Travis, the Teamfight Tactics tournaments will follow an open format for the community, that is, everyone will be able to register and compete, just like in Golf tournaments, for example.

“It’s important to have tournaments that are open to the TFT community, but of course, it’s good to know that you’ll also be playing against professional players, just like in open golf tournaments,” pointed out Geoff Virtue.

In the chat with the world press, Riot Games also revealed that Teamfight Tactics already has a team dedicated to eSports in the game, as well as League of Legends and Valorant, and that they are already planning the next steps of the professional competitive scene of TFT . So let’s stay tuned.

Teamfight Tactics is currently available for PC and mobile devices (iOS and Android), with cross-play and cross-progression.
