Squirrel With a Gun: A Fun, Charming but Sadly Short Experience
It’s very difficult to see something from Squirrel with a Gun and not be immediately curious, the theme is so absurd that it works, with a focus on humor and carefree fun. With such an absurd premise, I expected nothing less from this game.
Squirrel with a Gun Is a Lot of Fun, but Repetitive
Even from its proposal and even by watching a bit of it, you can see that Squirrel with a Gun is fun, but it can get a bit tiresome for both the player and the audience, as its repetitive premise and lack of variation in enemies and music makes it feel that way. Here we have a squirrel, who is on the run from agents and on a quest to collect golden nuts and that’s pretty much it, don’t expect a very complex or deep story and I don’t think it would fit well here, but it would certainly be funny.
The game focuses a lot on collectibles and rewards players who like to explore and complete various challenges to unlock outfits, which give our cute protagonist new abilities and even animations, but unfortunately I have to say that there aren’t as many as I would have liked. New weapons, coats and even filters for the photo mode. Some of its challenges didn’t feel worth the effort for a photo mode filter, maybe if the filter came with some matching clothes I’d feel more rewarded.
The Controls Work, Sometimes…
The controls generally work well within the genre of the game, as a third-person shooter, but at times, even due to the game’s chaotic camera, it can be frustrating for the player and even annoying for those watching. Controlling vehicles such as the boat can be more challenging as it’s very fast and not very precise, which is sure to make some challenges more difficult.
The recoil from the guns is also an interesting mechanic here, which brings an extra layer of depth to the game, after all, you can use the guns to jump higher by shooting downwards or some of them have a lot of damage but are difficult to aim, after all, you’re a little squirrel holding a giant gun.
Streamers Are Sure to Benefit From the Chaotic Adventure
Because it’s such an unusual and absurd game, Streamers will enjoy this adventure very much, because it’s a game that works well in a live stream, where fun and unexpected moments will happen, either because of the proposal or even because of difficulties in controls and challenges, allowing it to be a fun adventure from start to finish, even because it’s short.
If the streamer also wants to get 100%, there’s plenty to look for in the game, there are lots of collectibles to discover and the levels are very large.
Tested on its Steam version, the game requires an average machine, and ran well both on my machine and on another less powerful machine, with a total of 5 languages available, unfortunately very few, which will limit access to some streamers.
Overall, Squirrel with a Gun is an absurd adventure and that’s wonderful, fun in its concept and its application, but in the long run it can be a bit repetitive.
