Sky: Children of the Light – Simple, fun and free

“Sky: Children of the Light” is simple and fun. Begin your journey surrounded by thunder on a lone deserted island, a portal will take you to another place where the story unfolds. Light up lost memories and discover what lies beyond the clouds with your own wingbeats.

If you enjoyed “Journey”, you’ll most likely enjoy the open skies in “Sky Children of the Light”! There’s a lot of similarities between the two games. Instead of a scarf, you upgrade a cape by collecting “winged lights” that are hidden throughout the world. Your sky kid can also be customized, by selecting different capes, hairstyles, pants, personalities and more, which can be done at rest areas.Communicate with your friends or other players with emotes or text and play instruments together!

The game is rather simplistic, but the cloud effects are stunning and the environment is very beautiful. (screenshots from the Nintendo switch doesn’t do it justice.)

“Sky: Children of the Light” was first released on iOS in 2019 and there’s a very loyal fanbase and communities dedicated to the game.

The Good

It’s a freemium game, you don’t need to spend anything to play, the cash shop items are just for cosmetics and in-game currency you can earn.

Usually I would get some other sky kids appearing in chat, but they disappear quickly if you’re not a very chatty streamer. I don’t think it would be too difficult building a small community around the game and have viewers join to help you out with quests that requires a certain amount of people to start and complete. The game is free and no-one’s losing anything!

Regular seasonal events is a thing and new areas will be added occasionally, collectibles usually follow.

Cross play across the different devices.

The Bad

There aren’t as many players as it used to be during it’s heyday. Some areas require a special requirement, most likely a specific cape and one area requires a player to have an exclusive cape from the Nintendo Switch shop. You don’t need to own the cape, you could hold hands with players you’re friends with wearing it to access the area. Waiting around for another player is tedious, especially for quests which requires more than 2 participants.

Sudden global cutscenes can interrupt the flow of your exploration and flying, even if you’re not the one activating the scene.

The last parts of the game can be very brutal and annoying playing through.

Controls can be wonky.

No PC or XBOX version as of writing.

Must be online to play.

Summary

I really enjoyed playing this game and been playing through several times to explore and find more secrets and upgrades.

If Journey is your kind of jam, this is too!

The game’s been working rather well on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, feels very optimized for whichever platform of choosing.
