Sancticide: A Sacred Journey into the Apocalypse
Sancticide is currently released in Early Access, is an action RPG that aims to deliver a deep philosophical experience through a biblical prophecy. Players take on the role of Ezekiel, an officer of the Mountain, tasked by the Creator with purging a post-apocalyptic world of its corruption.
The setting draws clear inspiration from the Bible, particularly the Book of Revelation, portraying a morally decayed world that blends sacred themes with horror environments. Like a soulslike game, the narrative is minimalistic, conveyed through environmental storytelling and enigmatic NPCs who each have their own perspective on the world’s state. Unfortunately the voice acting feels lifeless, likely due to the partial use of AI-generated voices, which significantly ruins the atmosphere.
Morals and choices in Sancticide
One of the Sancticide most important mechanics is the Kosher and Non-Kosher system, which influences not only the story but also how NPCs perceive the player and which missions become available. This moral compass essentially reflects the extent to which the player’s choices align with doctrine, creating an intriguing dynamic between good and evil. While promising on paper, how this system will fully develop remains uncertain, as the current Early Access version only includes the first act of the story.

A broken soulslike-roguelite formula
Sancticide’s combat system is heavily inspired by soulslike titles, demanding precise timing for dodges, parries and attacks. Each enemy is unpredictable and requires careful study to determine the best tactical approach. However, there is one major issue: upon death, players cannot retrieve their body, meaning all collected loot is permanently lost.
This fundamentally disrupts the roguelite/soulslike formula, where recovering lost resources is typically a core feature. Additionally, combat responsiveness is lacking, particularly when using a controller. Hit detection feels inconsistent and parrying is nearly impossible due to input delay, making precise counters frustratingly unreliable.

Holy Bugs, I’m stuck!
Sancticide is still in Early Access, so some bugs are expected, but I have seen early access titles that feel way more polished. I lost count of how many times I got stuck on the floor or on rocks, forcing me to restart from the beginning. It got so frustrating that it completely killed my motivation to keep playing. This is why I wouldn’t recommend this game to streamers, unless they’re looking to have a laugh at the constant bugs and glitches.

( votes)Summary
Sancticide offers an interesting post-apocalyptic setting, but it struggles with lifeless AI voice acting, broken mechanics, unresponsive combat and frustrating bugs that can completely ruin the experience. My review is based on the current Early Access version, which means that hopefully the game can be further improved before the final release.
