RunOut will bring the racing competitiveness into Party Games
Party Games are becoming more and more popular by the day, and new titles, with new mechanics and new ways to have fun with your friends and family, are coming to the market.
In the batch of releases in 2024, comes RunOut, a party game that promises to bring a different kind of competitiveness to the genre: a racing competitiveness.
Planned to be released later this year, Gamohol recently had the opportunity to sit down with Pisorn Chungviwatanant, the founder and the main game designer of WakaStudio, to discuss RunOut and how it will make it stand out among other party games.
What makes RunOut different from other party games
At a first glance, RunOut may look like games such as Party Animals, but its premise is very different. In fact, it mixes the gameplay of games like Super Mario Bros. and Fall guys into one new friendly (or not-so-friendly) competitive experience.
“RunOut is a 2.5D horizontal platformer that emphasises competitive and cooperative play”, explains Pisorn, that continues: “Players navigate through unpredictable levels, activating switches that can either help or hinder their progress. These switches might trigger disasters for opponents or provide random advantages, keeping the game dynamic and exciting.”
“We wanted to create a game that brings people together, whether they’re friends or strangers. Party games are perfect for this because they can create magical moments of fun and competition. RunOut features dynamic challenge screens that move automatically, requiring players to stay within the frame and engage in fast-paced, strategic gameplay”, said Pisorn.
With randomly generated levels and a bunch of items and unpredictable things happening on the screen, RunOut seems very fun, but what will make it stand out and attract the attention of players?
“Firstly, the dynamic challenge screen keeps the action unpredictable and engaging. Secondly, the game’s emphasis on hunting and outmanoeuvring opponents within a moving frame adds a layer of tension and excitement. Finally, our team mode allows players to use character abilities strategically, drawing some inspiration from games like Rainbow Six”, explained Pisorn, that continued:
“If you’re looking to create memorable moments with friends, RunOut is the game to try. Its combination of competitive gameplay, unique character abilities, and dynamic challenges makes it a fun and engaging experience for everyone.”
Creating games as an indie developer
Indie game developers are an important part of the industry, bringing titles that excel in creativity, new gameplay mechanics and unique art styles, those studios are keeping the art of videogames alive in a market constantly commanded by the biggest sales.
But being an indie game developer comes with challenges, and with WakaStudio and the game RunOut wouldn’t be any different.
“The biggest challenge was ensuring the game was both enjoyable and balanced. Implementing our ideas was more difficult than we initially thought due to the many details that needed fine-tuning. We had to constantly adjust levels to maintain a competitive yet fun experience for players”, explained Pisorn.
With smaller budgets to develop the games, indie studios can count on the streamer community to provide feedback on their titles, and also to see how attractive the games can be to an audience.
With RunOut, Pisorn assures us that the streamer community is an important part of the development of the game and will make sure that they are heard.
“The streaming community is crucial”, said Pisorn. “We paid close attention to how our game would perform on live streams and how streamers could engage their audiences with it. We plan to provide special demos for streamers and are open to their feedback to improve the game.”
The future of RunOut
Besides being very popular among the streamers and their audiences, party games excel in yet another feature: updates. And for that, RunOut will be delivering exactly what the public expects of a party game.
“We have a roadmap that includes new levels, game modes, and even a story mode, although we haven’t announced all the details yet. Our focus this year is on perfecting the multiplayer experience and preparing for future expansions”, explained Pisorn.
RunOut will be released later this year on Steam and will have versions for mobile devices (iOS and Android) and consoles in the future.
