Originally released in 2020, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 already comes from a great sequence of games covering various arcs of the anime with many playable characters and missions to complete.

Surprising us in 2023, Bandai decided to present fans of the fourth game in the series with a second season of DLCs, expanding its content to the current arc of the anime in Japan.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors’ fans are in for a treat with lots of brawling and unbridled action

For those who don’t know the games in the Musou series (or Warriors in the West), they consist of a map divided into several zones and with many hordes of enemies, where your character is certainly stronger than them. With a simple sequence of attacks you can send hundreds of soldiers flying everywhere, which fits in very well with One Piece, so it was a mix that worked very well.

These are usually niche games, not everyone is attracted by their unbridled fighting, but I find it very relaxing to be able to sit down in front of the console and destroy everything in my path. And that works very well on a live stream.

The game has its challenging moments, but it leaves the streamer with plenty of freedom to enjoy the game while managing to talk to and entertain his audience.

Here we have four types of character, Power Types, who are very strong and easily controlled, as their blows are devastating. Speed types who can pull off incredible combos and move around the map in absurd ways. The Sky type, which consists of characters who work a lot on staying in the air and with aerial combos, which was something new in this game when compared to the previous one, and finally, technique types, these require you to be more cautious and do more preparation to use their skills in the best possible way, like Nami for example, who marks her enemies with clouds and then unleashes a direct bolt of lightning at each marked enemy.

There are many different characters and styles to suit all tastes, which will please the streamer and their audience, who will have a wide variety of powers to follow.

Extra game modes and lots of post-game content

In this game we have a lot of content in addition to the story mode. It covers the history of One Piece from its first arc to the start of the Wano saga. Of course, as it’s a huge story, we don’t get all the arcs from the animation, but we do get several scenes that explain what happens between arcs that aren’t available to play.

The game takes us through five of these most important stories and one made for the game based on Wano, since that saga had not yet been completed during its initial release.

After finishing the story, we have plenty of playable characters and even more to discover. We have a mode where we can replay the story mode missions freely with any of the characters and there is also a game mode called Treasure Log, where we have unique missions separate from the story, allowing the streamer and their audience to have plenty to follow after finishing the main mode.

And in all these modes it’s possible to play cooperatively, locally and online! Making the adventure more fun and making it easier to complete some missions.

Additional content after 3 years. What’s new here?

To the surprise of many, 3 years after its initial release, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 has received a second season of DLC. As of the date of this review, only the first batch has been released, but it brings us the latest and most powerful version of our playable protagonist for the first time and 2 more very important characters in the current anime saga and fan favourites, as well as extra episodes with more adventures to be played, certainly revitalizing the game.

It’s a nice treat for fans who thought they’d completed everything and with the certainty that there’s even more content to come.

One Piece DLC

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 has been received for testing in its PC version on Steam. The game is very light and runs very smoothly on an average machine. It’s also available in 13 different languages, which makes it very easy for streamers to cover in their live streams. However, the game is only dubbed in Japanese, so be aware of that.

Summary

In the end, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 is a marriage between the hit anime and the musou genre that went perfectly together. It manages to bring the feel of the adventures of Luffy and his crew with all their exaggeration and absurd powers. Even those who aren’t fans of the musou genre, but like the anime, will enjoy this game.
