Mullet Mad Jack

MULLET MAD JACK: 90’s action in the best Anime and Cyberpunk style

MULLET MAD JACK is a Single-Player FPS game with Rogue-like elements. Developed by Brazilian Indie Studio Hammer95 Studios and published by Epopeia Games. Released on May 15, 2024, for PC.

In it, we are Mad Jack, a police officer who is on a mission to save the biggest influencer of the year 2090! And to do so, he will face Billionaires who kidnapped her, while massacring his enemies in a brutal and stylish way, while racing against time because he only has 10 seconds to live and needs Dopamine from battles to be able to live and reach her (and get a super cool sneaker as a reward).

Anime and Movies from the 90’s everywhere

MULLET MAD JACK takes us to a futuristic world that is inspired by movies and anime from the 90s.

Mad Jack is a “Moderator” who works for the Peace Corporation. This company places the Moderator in a Livestream, while monitoring his life and encouraging him to face the Billionaires and save the biggest Influencer in the world. As a reward, he will receive a pair of super-stylish sneakers. While the corporation gains views from this broadcast.

This Mad Jack theme is completely inspired by Cyberpunk universes, where the world is taken over by multibillion-dollar companies that encourage people to become dependent on frivolous goods, to feed their pockets and their egos.

MULLET MAD JACK

Hammer95 Studios did an incredible job of taking inspiration from great works from the 90’s. You can see inspiration in works such as Akira, Riding Bean, Cowboy Bebop, Megazone 23, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Demolition Man, Lethal Weapon, Kamen Rider Series, and so on.

The game has many catchphrases, visuals, scenarios, jokes inspired by action movies, and moments of breaking the fourth wall. And with gameplay in the classic FPS Boomer-Shooter style like DOOM. And it is even inspired by more recent games, such as Post Void and Hotline Miami, as shown by Hammer95 Studios itself on its social media.

MULLET MAD JACK brings a Frenetic Gameplay with non-stop action

MULLET MAD JACK’s gameplay is amazing. In it, you need to progress through several floors while staying alive. And on each floor, you can choose an upgrade. Every 10 floors, there is a boss, and after defeating him, you lose your upgrades, but you can choose a fixed upgrade that will remain throughout your Runs.

You have 10 seconds to live, and you need to constantly kill enemies in different ways to save time. And depending on how you kill them, you can earn some bonus seconds of life.

For example, Headshots give you more time than just shooting the body. You can also kick your enemies into televisions, turbines, power grids, soda machines, or holes; you can pick up books, bottles, and knives scattered around the stage to perform stylish finishes; you can blow up fire extinguishers, barrels of gasoline, and so on.

The same can be said about your enemies, because when they damage you, you lose seconds of life.

Each new floor allows you to choose one of several upgrades, such as different weapons, the possibility of earning more points for stylish deaths, resistance to some types of damage, a longer lifespan, upgrades for some types of weapons, etc.

As a good FPS, you will have access to a wide range of weapons, including Pistols, Machine Guns, Rifles, Shotguns, some laser weapons, and Katanas. In fact, I particularly loved the Fire Katana and played the entire game with it.

Mullet Mad Jack is also Rogue-like; that is, if you die, you lose your upgrades. But every 10 floors, the game gives you a checkpoint and a fixed upgrade; so, you don’t start from scratch, but every 10 floors and with at least one new improvement, which varies between the option of being able to use the upgrades for each Run, being able to start it again with a previous upgrade, or the possibility of getting a stronger version of your weapon.

And as a highlight for the Game’s Bosses, I won’t say too much to avoid spoiling, but you will have some cool surprises, both mechanically and aesthetically.

MULLET MAD JACK

The game has several difficulty options, varying from taking more damage and requiring more stylish deaths to add time to an option to go back to the beginning after each death, even including an accessibility option for those who want a more classic Boomer-Shooter experience without the time limit.

There is also a second game mode in which you climb infinite floors, testing how far you get and being able to upload your Rank to a global leaderboard.

A beautiful Anime-Synthwave aesthetic and soundtrack Style

Definitely one of the strongest points of MULLET MAD JACK: its visuals and soundtrack.

Hammer95 Studios managed to create a stunning look. Cyberpunk-style visuals with a Synthwave-style color palette. There is a lot of focus on neon colors, shades of purple, orange, blue, and red. Perfectly balanced with the designs of enemies, bosses, scenarios, weapons, effects, menus… absolutely everything.

The game also has an anime-style opening with a 90’s VHS movie feel and a very addictive song.

The soundtrack during the Gameplay matches the fast pace of the Game and its setting. The frenetic vibe of the levels is accompanied by equally fast music, just as the anticipation of certain bosses is preceded by music with a heavy, slow tension, preparing you for what’s to come.

A perfect game for Live Stream, both in Gameplay and Theme

We played with maximum settings, and the game worked very well throughout the entire gameplay.
It also has many graphic configuration options, so it is possible to configure it according to the Streamer’s needs.

MULLET MAD JACK goes well with a Live Stream because the game satirizes the entire current concept of Influencers and Live Streams while parodying the Cyberpunk theme of multi-billion-dollar companies running everything.

And because it is a challenging Game, all Runs are very fast and beautiful to watch, in addition to its soundtrack being very good to listen to, which was one of the most highlighted points by the public.

And because it’s Rogue-like, the Game doesn’t tend to be very long, which makes it even more accessible to Live Stream it, whether trying to finish it all at once or playing in small Runs during several tries. And the texts were localized to many languages. And it currently has an English dub. And a Japanese dub is planned for the future.
