Metacritic: The best and worst games of 2023

Despite growing disbelief on the part of the gaming community, the Metacritic website is still the main database for game reviews today and after the end of 2023, which delivered us great titles and some disappointments, we can look back and answer the question: What were the best and worst games of 2023 according to Metacritic?

After seeing Baldur’s Gate 3 crowned as game of the year on The Game Awards 2023, beating out so many other incredible titles released in 2023, we can now look at Metacritic and see what critics considered the best games of the year.

And as expected, Baldur’s Gate 3 came out on top. With a final score of 96, the Larian Studios title was considered the best game of 2023 by Metacritic critics. Its score, however, is the same as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, for Nintendo Switch, which came in second place.

The Top 3 ends with another exclusive Nintendo Switch release: Metroid Prime Remastered, which received a score of 94.

Metacritic reveals the worst games of 2023

While it seems easy to list the best games, the gaming community is also very interested in listing the worst games of the year. And in 2023, some big disappointments were released.

According to Metacritic, the list of the 10 worst games of 2023 was assembled based on the worst ratings from critics, with any game with less than 7 ratings from professional critics not being considered for the list.

If the same game had several low ratings on different platforms, only the lowest rating was considered for the list.

And while Baldur’s Gate 3 was unanimously the best game, The Lord of The Rings: Gollum was unanimously the worst game of 2023. The Daedalic title is also considered the worst adaptation of The Lord of The Rings for games.

As we begin the year 2024, the expectation is also for major releases in the games industry, just as it was in 2023. But the hope is that some mistakes, often basic, can be avoided and that disappointments can be minimized.
