Jawbreaker: a survival horror game with good references but basic execution
Released on April 23, 2024, Jawbreaker is a Survival Horror game with a great atmosphere in the best style of Resident Evil and Silent Hill and which has a lot of stealth mechanics (sneaking around to overcome obstacles, enemies and to progress through the map).
The game starts off with good scenery and references and manages to build itself up with a certain amount of praise, but it doesn’t necessarily surprise in its execution.
FPS gameplay with a little bit of hiding
The gameplay is basic first-person shooter (FPS) and allows you to explore and collect items in places, either to progress to the next parts or to heal yourself, among other things.
You can also hide inside lockers and walk stealthily to avoid contact with enemies and crouch, as well as run when pursued by enemies because you’ve been detected. Initially, the stealth mechanics can be frustrating because you have a radar that shows you the zone where the character is moving, but the game map doesn’t indicate very well how to move around the maps you’re on, leaving you a little lost.
That being the aim of the game, it’s not a big problem, but in the very first areas of the game you’re already being chased by a large number of enemies, which makes the game’s difficulty curve very high right from the start.
However, the ambience shines through, making the stream’s audience mainly interested in the game’s mysteries and the player’s objective, as well as how they can escape the trap they’ve fallen into.
Is Jawbreaker good for a livestream?
Despite these factors, the game is very short, can be completed in up to 5 hours, and doesn’t have much of a replay factor. It can be an interesting experience, but not necessarily different from what the survival horror genre is all about.
The game’s optimization and graphics are well balanced, and even computers with more modest requirements can run it, whether on a livestream or not, without any major difficulties, which helps to immerse you in the game, which is its strong point.
As a horror game, Jawbreaker falls back on old clichés, but its universe is its greatest strength. However, the gameplay isn’t enough to hook players or the target audience.

Summary
Jawbreaker is excellent in terms of its atmosphere and characterization, but unfortunately it disappoints in terms of difficulty progression, gameplay and even though it has good references to the survival horror and stealth genres, it doesn’t do them justice during its execution. It’s not a bad game, but its potential gives the impression that it could have been better constructed and even polished. In a livestream, it can be a little repetitive and even though it’s short, I wouldn’t recommend playing it in one sitting.
I have 25 years, I produce content to internet for 4 years and I like retro games, indies and I’m an enthusiast for new launches. I have as my favorite games Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Mario World, Hollow Knight and Red Dead Redemption II, per example. I like to experiment everything and the more, the better, but I never get sick of my comfort games!
