Death or Treat, a simple rogue-lite adventure

Scary dramatically enter HallowTown only to find out that candy isn’t cool any more and “Storyum” is the new thing everyone’s addicted to! The streets are empty and there are none to purchase candy from you at all! Can Scary liberate HallowTown from this new highly addictive substance? Big names are behind the substance and the big boss is none other than Fackerberg himself.

Make new friends by renovating shops and unlock their services! There are skills to upgrade, weapons to make and materials to gather! This is all Death or Treat!

This is a classic platformer game with rogue-lite elements, upgrades and materials are not lost upon death, but at first you’re limited to how many different materials you can bring back to town. Combat is simple and very hack and slashy without much thought. All upgradeables need materials and a certain amount of currency. That’s technically Death or Treat in a nutshell!

Death or Treat is for rogue-lite fans and those who seek games with easy achievements! It’s a simple game with basic mechanics.

The experience of Death or Treat

What you see is what you get, it doesn’t reinvent the genre. Keeping up with the chat is easy and your audience could help you look out for secret rooms and other things you might’ve missed! This might be an “entry level” kind of game of getting into speedrunning.

Death or Treat doesn’t offer much in the sense of exploring as there are only so many levels on rotation, it’ll make memorizing easy and you’ll zoom through the levels knowing where mobs and secrets are quite quickly!

The Good

The game looks beautiful and I enjoy all the tiny details in the environment! The animation is well done and puts life into the characters and surroundings. Cute soundtrack that matches your adventures through HallowTown.

The Bad

Heavy use of pop-cultural references, which I’m personally not into since it breaks the immersion and doesn’t feel unique. Feels repetitive pretty fast.

Summary

It’s a cute and an easier rogue-lite game! It seems like a game that would attract a little crowd from the speed runner community with time. The game is short and simple, but doesn’t bring anything new to the genre. Playing the game after half an hour makes it already feel very repetitive and slow. The controls feel a bit unresponsive sometimes, but I’m not sure if it’s the game or my controller being a bit faulty.

It’s a very good looking game and looking forward to see more from the developers!
