Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake – With improved graphics and single-player mode, it doesn’t change much from the original

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons was the first game by the now well-known director Josef Fares, creator of A Way Out and It Takes Two, winner of Game of the Year in 2021.

The great thing about the game was that you had to control two different characters, each on one of the controllers’ analog sticks, but the main focus of the gameplay was multiplayer, which turns out to be the usual feature of all games by this developer and his team.

Brothers for the new generation of games

At the end of February 2024, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake was released with next-generation graphics, some gameplay improvements and, above all, a switch between two gameplay modes: the individual gameplay mode and the cooperative gameplay mode, which can be played both locally and via Remote Play Together on PC/Steam, i.e. remotely with another friend and only one of the pair needing to have the game.

With the brilliance of a story paired with good gameplay and simple mechanics that are different but work very well, the game mixes 3D platforming with exploration and interconnected puzzles between two characters in an outstanding way, marking Josef’s passion for asymmetrical multiplayer games.

There is a greater depth to the importance of this creator and his studio, Hazelight, which emerged after the release of the original version of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, in building games in this style of games. Even so, due to the simplicity of the mechanics, this game ends up being simpler to have a single-player mode.

Connect with your audience

In terms of the stream, the game connects with the audience because it has an interesting story dealing with the relationship between two brothers, the older and the younger, their different ways of seeing the world demonstrated at the start of the journey and how each one progresses through the parts and interacts with the puzzles.

However, the game has sensitive content and communication with the audience is required, as well as warnings during the stream about this content and possible triggers for some people.

The game can be finished in a single stream or, depending on how a content producer divides their content, in two streams. The game can be finished in around 5 hours and its biggest replayability factor lies in the fact that, if you play alone, you’ll want to play with a friend afterwards.

As such, the game doesn’t have a lot of content for the price it’s offered for, even though it wasn’t released as expensively as other remakes of well-known releases. Even so, the cost/benefit of the title isn’t the greatest.

In terms of performance, the game has high recommendations due to the graphics upgrade, but it has resolution settings, FPS and other settings, but it’s worth keeping an eye on because the game may not run as well on any computer precisely because of its requirements and especially if you’re playing and trying to stream at the same time.

There have been some reports of poor optimization of the PC version, which should be taken into account.

Summary

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is an indie classic and one of the great games from an established and inventive director, and is welcome in this new era of games. However, it’s important to question the performance problems, the cost/benefit issue and, above all, the amount of content offered when considering whether to bring this game on a stream or even play it if you have other games on your radar and at the top of your priority list. That said, this in no way invalidates the quality that Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake has artistically and in gameplay, being very faithful to its original.
