Atomic Heart: Trapped in Limbo – A short and surreal experience in a candy-like world
Trapped in Limbo is the second DLC recently released for Atomic Heart, the FPS adventure set during 1950s in an alternative reality in which the Soviet Union has become the most technologically advanced country of the world.
The story in this DLC is a direct continuation of the main game’s good ending, which is considered by many as the canonical one.
Atomic Heart: The story so far…
After defeating Dr. Sechenov, our protagonist (agent P-3) is betrayed by CHAR-les and sent to a dream-like dimension known as the Limbo. Here, he finds himself transformed into a white furry creature and must find a way to escape with the assistance of his dead wife, Katya, who have been conscious in the Limbo for three years.
Dr. Sechenov also managed to survive and is trapped in the Limbo as well, so if you still had questions at the end of the main game you will get some answers here. For more details about the content and gameplay of Atomic Heart’s main campaign, you can read our review written by Ludovicoluka. The game will also receive two more unannounced DLCs that will probably add more content to the plot.
A Temple Run first-person shooter
This DLC offers a very different experience than the base game and the previous DLC, Annihilation Instinct. Limbo is a surreal world and the gameplay adapts to the drastic change of scenario by introducing platforming sections and offering less action than before.
There are in total five levels that make you slide through platforms and climb candy-like towers. The gameplay here is a mix of Temple Run, Only Up and Fall Guys, so I can fairly say that this DLC is even more appealing to stream than base game.
Your audience might have fun experiencing something different than the usual action-packed first-person shooter. Occasionally, you will find a mini-game challenge or an arena in which you will need to shoot gingerbread men and other crazy enemies, but the main mechanic always consists in sliding and jumping through floating platforms with the shape of candies. You must also try to collect as many apples as you can, because they can be used to obtain new weapons, upgrades and skills at the vendor shop.
Graphically speaking, the Limbo world looks wonderful, but sadly also very linear. There isn’t much to explore or any secondary content to complete, which is a pity. The performance on PC though is nearly perfect. I didn’t find any issues and I was able to max almost all settings while having solid 60fps for my entire playthrough. Thanks to its many graphical options and the inclusion of DLSS/FSR, the DLC can be also played on older hardware as it’s not really demanding.
Recommended for short streams
Trapped in Limbo takes around 5 hours to complete, if you also take some time to read documents and hear optional audio logs, but it can last only a couple of hours if you follow the main story path. This DLC can be a very good choice for short streaming sessions and the colorful Limbo dimension will keep your audience engaged.
If you have already streamed the games I mentioned above, then this DLC can be a valid choice for you. The only downside is that, if you never streamed Atomic Heart, your viewers will probably feel very confused by the story, because it requires some knowledge of prior events, lore and characters. So overall, it’s really difficult to recommend streaming this DLC before the main campaign, because it wouldn’t make any sense.
Atomic Heart: Trapped in Limbo
Summary
Trapped in Limbo is a fun and exciting addition to the main campaign that is highly recommendable for short streaming sessions. It’s a different gameplay experience from standard FPS that will certainly divide people’s opinion, but shows the developers’ courage to test different ideas through DLCs.
