After riot in New York, Kai Cenat is officially charged by the police

The intention may have been the best, but announcing a free distribution of 300 PlayStation 5 consoles in New York caused more headaches for Kai Cenat than he would have imagined and the streamer was officially charged by the police, with a date set to appear in court.

The riot took place last Friday, August 4, in Union Square, New York, where hundreds of people showed up with the hope of getting a PS5 for free. But, of course, soon this mass of people generated real chaos with bottles and even stones being thrown by the most fervent fans.

According to the local press, at least 60 people were arrested, including Kai Cenat himself, after the police mobilized about a thousand officers to the scene of the confusion.

“We have encountered things like this before, but never to this level of dangerousness, where young people would not listen to our commands”, said NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey, who continued: “You had people walking around with shovels, axes and other tools from the construction trade. In addition, individuals were also lighting fireworks. They were throwing them towards police and they were throwing them at each other.”

An hour after the streamer’s arrest, the crowd dispersed.

Taken to the police station, Kai Cenat was given some official charges, including Inciting a Riot and Unlawful Assembly. The streamer already has a date to appear in court and answer for these accusations: August 18th.

According to The New York Times, Kai Cenat, who is one of the most popular streamers today, has not yet commented on the incident and the accusations he received from the police. The streamer also did not comment on his official social networks, followed by millions of people.

The mayor of New York, Eric Adams, however, made his statement about what happened. On Saturday, August 5, the mayor stated:

“Our children are being inundated by influencers, by those who consider themselves to be credible messengers. We are further looking into where there’s some even outside agitators. You don’t come to get free Game Boys and bring smoke bombs and bring M80s and bring other disruptive items.”
