After criticism, Twitch removes anti-trans institution from supported charities

Twitch has always prided itself on its practices that are inclusive and protective of its community, and that is why many streamers were surprised by the choice of a declared anti-trans institution for their list of charities supported by a new tool on the platform.

With the new tool, Twitch makes it easier for streamers to help raise funds for charities pre-selected by the platform. And one of them has drawn sharp criticism: the LGB Alliance, a British anti-trans organization.

After the criticism, Amazon’s streaming platform decided to remove the institution from its list of supported charities. In a statement, the company said:

“Following a thorough review, we have removed the LGB Alliance from our list of approved charities. Twitch does not allow charities that violate our hateful conduct policies on Twitch, or whose organization or leadership engage in or promote behaviors that violate our Off-Service policy.”

Launched in late November, Twitch’s new charity tool adds a new way for streamers to help causes they support, without the need for further planning and setup.

Using it is very simple: when you activate the tool, a new button will appear on the streamer’s page, where the option to subscribe to the channel is located: the “Donate” button.

By clicking on “Donate”, the user will be able to choose between helping the institution chosen by the streamer or subscribing to the channel. Remember that subscriptions and Bits still go to the streamer, donations are made separately.

About the new charity tool, Twitch stated:

“We include a wide range of organizations in Twitch’s charity tool through our partnership with the PayPal Giving Fund so that streamers can choose which charities they align with and wish to support.

Inclusion on this list is not an endorsement from Twitch. However, we regularly review the list and remove organizations that violate our policies. Please continue to share your feedback to help us improve charity on Twitch.”
