A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead – Don’t Make a Sound

A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead is the first survival horror game based on the popular movie franchise, A Quiet Place. For those who don’t know, the movies tell the story of a family trying to survive an alien invasion and I highly recommend watching them, especially the first one.

Play as a New Survivor in the Universe of A Quiet Place

The intriguing concept of the movies is that these aliens are nearly blind but incredibly sensitive to sounds. While being set in the same world, the game tells the story of a new survivor that never appeared in the movies. You will play as Alex Taylor, a college student suffering from asthma who must learn how to survive in order to reach a safe shelter. The prologue takes its time to introduce all the characters and build the story, which might feel a bit slow if you’re eager to jump straight into the gameplay.

Realistic Sound Detection in A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead

Developers Stormind Games have brilliantly converted the movie main theme into an innovative gameplay feature, creating a detection system that automatically picks up any sound coming from your microphone. This mechanic makes the experience even more immersive, but also increases the difficulty level, as even the slightest noise from your microphone can attract the deadly creatures. The sound detection works excellently, but it is extremely sensitive, so make sure you are in a quiet environment before playing.

Fortunately, you can turn this feature off if you prefer a less intense level of immersion and challenge. Those who want to stream the game should definitely keep this mode activated to increase the tension and suspense. The audience will surely be more engaged in the stream, knowing that you can’t talk or make any noise with your mic.

Silence, The Best Strategy for Survival

Like in Alien: Isolation, stealth is a crucial aspect of the game. You must move quietly through abandoned locations where anything can make a sound. Be cautious when opening doors, and even walking on certain surfaces or activating traps can produce loud noises. The game doesn’t rely heavily on jump scares but rather maintains a constant tension that will keep you on the edge of your seat. At times, the game will inevitably put you face-to-face with alien creatures for narrative reasons, increasing the tension.

These encounters can cause Alex to have an asthma attack, which can be managed by consuming pills or inhalers found throughout the world. You can pick up items such as bottles and bricks to distract aliens, allowing you to move behind their backs.

Additionally, you have a set of basic items like a rechargeable flashlight, useful for dark environments, and a phonometer, which can read decibel levels and monitor the sounds you produce. If you make too much noise, running away from the aliens will cause Alex to consume energy faster, leading to an asthma attack. Escaping can often be futile, as the aliens can spawn instantly at your location and you don’t have much time to react.

The Stunning Visuals, Immersive Audio of A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead

Visually speaking, the game looks stunning and runs smoothly on PC, with only minor glitches. The alien creatures have been faithfully recreated and look exactly like in the movies, with great level of detail. The environments are grim and claustrophobic, creating a strong sense of loneliness and desperation.

As Alex explores abandoned houses and ruined train stations, she can find diaries, notes, graffiti, and personal items that tell the stories of other survivors. These details add depth to the narrative and connect the game to the movies. The sound design is also exceptionally well done; the few characters have great voice acting and the music is subtle, but always fitting the atmosphere perfectly.
