A Hero’s Rest: An RPG Town Simulator is Worth Exploring
Developed by Vanargand Games, A Hero’s Rest: An RPG Town Simulator is a charming game that offers you the opportunity to build your own medieval town. King George has tasked you with protecting the land from monsters and to do so, you must manage your town and recruit heroes.
Building Your Medieval Village in A Hero’s Rest: An RPG Town Simulator
Starting a new game, you can choose from five maps and toggle several modifiers on or off. You must also choose a name for your town, which cannot be changed later. The tutorial does a great job at introducing the base mechanics and throughout the game you will constantly receive helpful messages if you forget what to do.
Slow Progress and Clunky Construction
A Hero’s Rest: An RPG Town Simulator is slow-paced, but like most strategy games, there is an option to make time run faster. After purchasing your first plot, you can start building a tavern which allows you to buy more plots and expand your town.
The construction process is a bit unintuitive and imprecise. It’s hard to create perfectly aligned and symmetrical buildings, as something will always look out of place depending on the camera perspective. This can be annoying if you are obsessed with precise building. Personally, I didn’t mind having some crooked houses since the world design is unrealistic. Rooftops are missing, so you can see inside buildings without the need to zoom in, but hopefully they will be added to increase realism.
A Hero’s Rest: An RPG Town Simulator Has Charming Visuals with a Medieval Touch
Visually speaking, A Hero’s Rest: An RPG Town Simulator looks great and has a cartoonish art style reminiscent of the old Fable games. The user interface features a wooden theme that looks simple but requires time to learn and navigate. While not extraordinary, the sound effects and music do a good job of setting the medieval tone.
We Can Be Heroes, Just for One Day
Managing resources, crafting items, and upgrading shops is important for expanding the town. Once you have built enough constructions, heroes will visit your town and possibly settle in. They all have different attributes and can be customized with names, job classes, and equipment. The customization options are really great, and every piece of equipment has detailed features, multiple color options and levels of rarity.
You can use the quest board to access quests and send heroes on new adventures. You don’t control them, so their survival depends on their equipment and attributes. If they successfully complete a quest, they can return safely with new valuable resources. If they don’t, you will lose them forever.
In the meantime, King George will also give you fetch quests that must be completed within a certain time frame. If failed, these quests can potentially damage the reputation of your town. In a world that must be protected from monsters, it seems odd that the king acts against you with quests that only aim to undermine your hard work if failed. Additionally, you must pay the king taxes, so completing his quests might be the quickest way to gather resources without solely relying on your heroes.
Overall, the game’s mix of town-building and RPG mechanics provides a visually appealing and engaging experience, with impressive visuals and a great variety of customization options. Being a strategic game, A Hero’s Rest can take a lot of hours to complete and has the potential to be infinite. Unfortunately, the game lacks precision in building and can be tedious due to its many fetch quests. Despite these drawbacks, it still offers a worthwhile experience for fans of the genre.
