Pirates Outlaws brings a high range of content to fans of the deck-building genre
When it comes to deck-building games, what are we most looking for? Absurd combinations, a good variety of characters, powers, enemies and lots of stages, correct? “Pirates Outlaws” provides us with much of this directly from the base game, without having to pay for additional content, and best of all, the way we used to: by playing and unlocking content available in the game.
Charismatic and thematic visuals are very eye-catching
The graphics in “Pirates Outlaws” are simple, but no less eye-catching or beautiful. The game has a very creative character design that fits the theme, and this goes for the characters and enemies as well as the biomes, of which we have in an abundance.
Typical of the genre, the game doesn’t focus much on attack animations or special effects, which may turn off some people who don’t know much about the genre and want something more flashy. However, the brilliance of the game is in its possibilities for strategy and combinations of the characters’ initial abilities and deck with other cards that we pick up during the adventure.
Gameplay doesn’t deviate much from the imposed style, but brings its own charm
Standard in the genre, the gameplay consists of choosing one of the available characters and then going through a series of paths with battles, events, stores, taverns, etc. From there you can plan your choices and better control the RNG, after all this is a roguelite we are talking about and the RNG will always be an involved part.
Something important in the game is also to pay attention to the condition of your ship. You are having a great match and forgetting about maintenance can end your game, which brings another layer to the strategy. Making specific stops and setting aside money to prevent your ship from sinking is extremely important and something different from what other games of the genre have done.
Combat is where we have a major difference from other deck-building games. Instead of having a mana bar for the cost of the cards, we have ammunition, and cards that do not use ammunition can be played at will, while firearms or some skills consume this bar. The key is to be able to work both styles well, because ammo doesn’t reload by itself and you need to use another card to reload. So the strategy factor here is very important. But don’t be scared! It looks complicated, but it is easy to learn.
Pirates Outlaws has a lot of content to be unlocked
“Pirates Outlaws” brings us a surprising amount of 16 characters and 7 maps to explore. Each character has about nine unlockable costumes and the maps have variations of bosses. With each end game, your score will unlock more content, so the better you play, the faster you will get new features in the game.
Some of these new features are unlockable by completing stages, others by playing in arena mode, and so on. For a streamer and his audience who enjoys the genre, this unlocking content is a must, after all, with so many different characters it is possible to test multiple combinations.
The game currently has nine languages available, which is great for a huge variety of streamers.
The version received for testing was from STEAM and the game ran very smoothly without any problems, and can be played quietly on less powerful machines.
An important addendum: this review is exclusively of the PC version on steam. The mobile version is cheaper, but there are microtransactions in it. The steam version, on the other hand, has everything already available.
Pirates Outlaws
Summary
Overall, Pirates Outlaws is a brilliant game that brings a lot of strategy and content to its player and its audience. However, deck-building games may not appeal to everyone, but for fans of the genre, here we have more than enough for hours and hours of fun.
