Funko Fusion: The Multiverse is Here
If you’ve ever owned a LEGO set or played a LEGO game featuring characters from Marvel, Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings or Disney, you’re likely already familiar with Funko POP! figures. However, this is probably the first time the iconic toy brand has its own third-person action game with Funko Fusion with such impressive graphics.
Not only does the game look beautiful, but it also brings together over 20 iconic franchises from comics, games, movies, and TV shows, all reimagined in the distinctive Funko style.
A Silly Story through Seven Iconic Worlds
The main storyline is simple yet filled with humor: Freddy Funko is under attack by the evil Eddy, and players need to collect crowns to help him win the war. This premise serves as an excuse to dive into seven different worlds based on popular franchises like Jurassic World, The Thing, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Hot Fuzz, The Umbrella Academy, Masters of the Universe and Battlestar Galactica.
Although the number of worlds is somewhat limited compared to the high number of Funko characters, they are well-varied and colorful, providing many interesting jokes and cultural references. Fans of these franchises will surely appreciate exploring the worlds they’ve always loved watching.
Each world is packed with hidden collectibles, which slightly boost replayability because it’s impossible to find them all in a single run.
Between A Shooter and A Classic Platformer
After a brief tutorial, players can dive into the worlds in any order they choose. Each world consists of five levels and culminates in a final boss fight. The gameplay is straightforward yet engaging, blending exploration, environmental puzzle-solving, and combat. Players can switch between 60+ Funko characters, each with unique skills to tackle various enemies and bosses.
Boss fights generally follow a similar pattern, requiring players to target highlighted weak points while fending off waves of standard enemies. However, after completing two or three worlds, many players might find the combat becoming somewhat repetitive. Thankfully, the puzzle-solving sections are more compelling.
These involve activating switches to unlock doors or using 3D printers to create tools that remove obstacles. While the puzzles are relatively easy to solve, they help to break up the action and provide a welcome change of pace from the more intense shooting moments.
Technical Issues and Future Updates
While the PC version is visually stunning, it does have some technical issues. Players might encounter glitches, such as characters getting stuck in the environment, and occasional frame drops that can disrupt the experience. Currently, the game lacks online co-op or multiplayer modes, but the developers have promised these features will be available with future updates. This should enhance replayability and make the game even more enjoyable.
With the upcoming multiplayer update, Funko Fusion is set to become a fantastic game for streamers. Even in its current state, it can entertain viewers with its humor and countless easter eggs from so many beloved franchises.
