SysOps Saga: Become A Site Reliability Engineer

SysOps Saga is a game aimed at a specific audience, either those already in the business of managing sites, their security, etc., with a knowledge of certain technical terms such as logs, servers, etc., or those wishing to learn and find out more about these professions.

Chapters in SysOps Saga bring evolving challenges

The game is based on chapters, and each chapter is made up of levels with a number of stars (one to three) depending on your results on that level. Each chapter will have a guideline for what’s required, and each level will add something new.

For example, in one chapter, the context might be a site that manages several universities. We’ll need to ensure that each university server is properly linked to the main server. One of the levels may ask us to add a new university to the existing architecture, which will lead to a number of problems that can be resolved in the following levels, such as performance issues, bugs, etc.

From Bug Fixes to Performance and Security Challenges

The objectives are varied, ranging from finding a bug and asking a developer on our team to fix it, thus using a new version of the element to make our architecture more robust, to performance problems that require us to add elements to our chain in order to filter upstream, to security problems.

SysOps Saga is Not for Everyone

As we said earlier, the game isn’t for everyone, despite a tutorial and an encyclopedia, because there are a few technical terms you need to know, and you also need to know what to do when you have a problem (increase server performance, etc.).

Tools and Resources in SysOps Saga

To find out what to do, we’ll have several tools at our disposal. As already mentioned, we have a tutorial and an encyclopedia. We’ll also have our global architecture with links between the different servers, which will be colored differently, giving us very important information about slowdowns in the architecture.

There’s also a logbook for each element, so we can track down bugs or blockages, for example. We have a team chat on which we can see various exchanges, which may indicate that our developer has fixed a bug or given us some pointers. Last but not least, we have graphs on each element to give us new information, such as the percentage of CPU usage, for example.

From a streamer’s point of view, you’ll need to explain the various technical terms to your less term-oriented community, but you’ll be able to get help from the more knowledgeable to get you out of complicated situations.

Summary

In SysOps Saga, you’re an engineer in charge of ensuring the robustness and reliability of your network architecture, including servers, in order to meet various objectives. You’ll also have to improve your architecture by making it evolve. To do this, you’ll have access to graphs, logs and discussions with your team.
