Evertried: The concept of a turn-based strategy game designed with simplicity and repetition
Between February 14 and 19, 2024, Steam brought back for the second time the Made in Brazil Sale, a festival made up only of Brazilian games. There were more than 500 titles from the Brazilian scene and I had the opportunity to get to know some of these games.
In this text, I’d like to say a special thank for BitCake Studio, the organizers of the event, for the opportunity to be one of the participants in this event for the second year in a row and for the participating studios for the many games I was able to cover.
Now I’m going to talk about one of the games I tested at Made in Brazil: Evertried. This game had been on my Steam wishlist for some time and I found out at the festival that it was a Brazilian game (thanks to Lunic Games/Danilo Domingues for sending me the key), published by DANGEN Entertainment, which also published Dungeon Drafters (another Brazilian game), Astalon: Tears of the Earth, Lost Ruins, CrossCode and Iconoclasts.
Evertried: simply captivating, perfect for short live streams
As a turn-based strategy game, I confess I’m not used to this type of gameplay, but the beauty of the pixel-art itself and the way the game gets you hooked and keeps you trying as you progress through the floors takes you by surprise and captivates you, despite some gameplay vices: being a roguelike, it can be very punishing to start over every time and tiring for those who aren’t very fond of the style.
For a live stream, Evertried is a very good game to play in short sessions, little by little, both so that the player doesn’t get bored of the game and so that the mechanics can gradually be assimilated, as well as being able to show the audience little by little. The artistic side of the game is eye-catching, which can be a support for showing the audience a little more about the rest of the concept and for keeping on playing.
The game has a captivating simplicity, but it makes you think at every step and it’s not an easy game, far from it. Despite the repetition of certain mechanics and having to rely on luck in certain runs, the game isn’t unfair, but this kind of strategy, like a game of chess, and dying after receiving 3 hits, can make the game very unfair for beginners in the genre or even those who aren’t big fans of roguelikes.
Play it and replay it
Being a game with a high replayability factor, the time varies for you to finish a run or even explore all its secrets. The game usually has generous promotions on Steam, up to 50% off, and for the price and the content it offers, for lovers of the genre, it may be worth it.
In a stream, I don’t think it should be a game to sustain the entire content of a broadcast, but it’s a nice game for short sessions. In terms of performance, this game runs smoothly on any machine, without any major issues, and it also has versions for consoles.
This is a series of articles in which I’m going to look at Brazilian games that were featured in the Steam Made in Brazil Sale, both more recent games and titles that may be old but deserve consideration. The games market is huge and streamers should keep an eye out for any and all titles that look interesting to try out, play or even complete!
Evertried
Summary
Evertried is a well-regarded strategy game with a simple game design that works very well in turn-based combat, but is much harder than it looks. In this, it can be frustrating and demanding of players, which is not a problem. It has plenty of content and is entertaining for fans of the genre, as well as beautiful pixel art, but it may not appeal to an entire livestream audience. However, it’s a great choice for short gameplay sessions.
