Godbreakers Game Review: A Frenetic Action-Roguelike Where You Devour Your Enemies

Godbreakers is an upcoming action-roguelike that delivers frenetic combat and a 4-players co-op experience that blends chaos with strategy. The game takes place in a dystopian future where humanity faces extinction at the hands of an all-powerful artificial intelligence known as the Monad.

In a desperate bid for survival, the Coven, a group of celestial beings, resurrects humanity’s final weapon: you. As a vessel of the Coven, your mission is to traverse surreal biomes, defeat formidable enemies and ultimately face the Monad itself.

The recently released demo provides an early taste of what Godbreakers has to offer, highlighting its standout mechanic: the ability to devour enemies and absorb their unique powers.

Devour and Conquer | Godbreakers’ Signature Godbreak Mechanic Explained

At the core of Godbreakers is the “Godbreak” mechanic, a mechanic that allows players to devour enemies from within to steal their unique powers. Once an enemy’s health is sufficiently low, players can initiate the Godbreak, resulting in a dramatic explosion that not only eliminates the foe but also grants the player a new ability.

This feature adds a strategic layer to the gameplay, encouraging players to prioritize certain enemies to acquire specific powers that complement their playstyle. Combat is fluid and responsive, with players able to chain attacks, dodge, and utilize abilities seamlessly. While the demo primarily focuses on solo gameplay, Godbreakers supports up to four-player co-op, allowing players to team up and tackle challenges together.

The cooperative mode looks promising, as it introduces dynamic team synergies where players can combine stolen abilities to create devastating combos.

Stylized Chaos | Godbreakers’ Colorful Sci-Fi World Shines

Despite the dystopian story, Godbreakers adopts a colorful, cartoony and stylized sci-fi aesthetic, setting itself apart from the darker tones of many action-roguelikes. The game’s environments are vibrant, with fluid animations that make combat feel dynamic and visually engaging. The levels are linear, focusing on tight arenas that facilitate fast-paced combat.

While this design choice maintains the game’s momentum, I think that incorporating more exploratory elements or hidden areas could add depth and variety to the gameplay. On PC, performance is generally solid, though occasional dips occur during chaotic encounters with large numbers of enemies or particularly demanding boss fights. Optimizing these moments will be important for maintaining the game’s responsive feel in the full release.
